No matter how you choose to describe yourself and your sexuality, there are a number of different ways in which the community identifies itself. My favourite way of describing myself within a collective is queer or QUILTBAG+.

What does QUILTBAG+ mean, I hear you ask. It is a cute acronym and alternative way to talk about the LGBTQ+ community as a collective. The below is what is stands for:

Q= Queer

I= Intersex

B= Bisexual

+ Everything else 🌈

I love it because while writing about queer studies in an academic manner, the term queer chaffed at me as I was using it alongside quotes where is was used in a negative manner. QUILTBAG+ allowed me to distance myself from this negative connotation and create a seperate space within my discourse.

QUILTBAG is the term I feel most comfortable with, but just like people, everyone is different. Humans are subjective creatures and everyone is different, so if you find yourself agreeing or vehemently shaking your head at this term, just remember that it is okay. As long as you’re respectful of other people, their feelings, and how they identify themselves, you’re allowed to feel things.
